Strictly speaking The Green Room in Waterloo isn’t a pub, but we’d heard great things about their roast so we thought it might be in our interest to make an exception. And boy, are we glad we did!
The Green Room is situated just behind the National Theatre. It’s a lovely modern space furnished with recycled theatre stage props and ceiling to floor windows along the front. As an added bonus for those of you with little ones, the place is very family friendly, with children’s menus complete with colouring activities to keep them happy.
The roasts on offer were pork belly with crackling and apple sauce, lamb rump and mint sauce, sirloin and horseradish sauce and a veggie roast made with sweet potatoes, chickpeas and cashews. The prices varied between £13–16 so all pretty reasonable, we opted for lamb and pork and enjoyed a couple of tasty champagne cocktails while we eagerly waited for our food.
It’s not something we would mark an establishment down for but the presentation of this roast was second to none. Both roasts came looking like a lot of care had gone into them.
We have been disappointed with the roast potatoes of recent Sunday lunches but these did not disappoint. Although large they were everything we look for in a roastie; crispy on the outside, light and fluffy in the middle. The rest of the vegetables lived up to same high standards with the roast carrots, parsnips and beetroot (which added some lovely colour to the plate) all with good sweetness and bite. Cabbage was also included which hadn’t lost its colour or crunch but was ever so slightly over buttered for our liking.
The lamb was tender and very juicy. Not being a fan of mint sauce, I was pleasantly surprised by how well the sharp flavour cut through the smokey flavour of the charred edge of the meat (once I’d plucked up the courage to give it a try).
The pork was a similar story, beautifully tender with an amazing flavour. The apple sauce complimented the meat perfect and Samantha couldn’t stop raving about it! It was so good that she didn’t even realise they’d forgotten to give her any crackling (a favourite of hers) until we saw another patron’s plate on the way out! She’s decided it’s okay though, as it just means we will need to go back so she can give that crackling a try.
Even though we both had lovely sauces with our meats, we were both big fans of the gravy. It was exactly the right consistency with a lovely meaty flavour which complimented the rest of the meal perfectly. There was a little bit in the middle of each of our yorkshire’s which was a nice touch and as you can probably guess by now, the yorkshires were as good as everything else on the plate!
You’ve probably worked out by now that we absolutely loved this roast, everything was cooked to perfection and the flavours were amazing. We’re going to stop writing so you can head out and grab your table now!
